Facial cleansing is the basis of the daily care routine because it frees your skin from dirt, sweat, and make-up residues and guarantees healthy and radiantly beautiful skin.
But how often should you clean your face? And which care between foam cleanser, cleaning oil, and Co. is right for me? We clarify all questions about facial cleansing and present the best tips for every skin type.
Each skin type should cleanse its face differently (Givenchy, Fall/Winter 2018/19)
In order for facial care to develop its optimal effect, it should always be tailored to the personal complexion. The same principle also applies to facial cleansing, because this is the only way to optimally cleanse the skin and prevent clogged pores, dry skin, or wrinkles. And these are the most important tips:
If the skin is neither dry nor impure, you have a normal complexion. Because this is particularly uncomplicated, you have a free choice of cleaning products between foam cleanser and washing gel.
So that the skin remains in balance, you should still rely on a gentle facial cleansing that provides the skin with moisture. You can also supplement the cleansing ritual with a peeling once a week to rid the face of dead skin cells.
If the skin tends to have a lot of dry spots and is often tight after removing make-up, moisturizing, mild cleansing milk or a cleansing oil is the right care. Very important: These should be free from alcohol or artificial fragrances, as these are aggressive and can only dry out or even irritate the skin.
At the same time, facial cleansing should provide an extra dose of moisture and nutrients that strengthen the skin barrier. Cleansing oils - which contain a mix of different natural oils and dissolve in water - are therefore our favorite for rough skin.
Beauty tip: Never wash dry skin with very hot water, as this also dries out - this applies to the entire body, including in the shower.
Do you have sensitive skin that irritates quickly and reacts with redness? Then the same applies to dry skin: keep your distance from perfume and alcohol and opt for a gentle, moisturizing cleansing foam or milk. A great plus is soothing, mild ingredients à la chamomile, marigold, etc.
And: with sensitive skin, additional (chemical) peelings are taboo! Better to use a soothing facial toner.
Combination skin is a hybrid of two different skin types: While the T-zone typically tends to have oily skin, large pores, and blemishes, many dry areas of skin occur on the cheeks. Combination skin, therefore, needs a balancing cleanser that addresses both needs.
Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or aloe vera, which provide plenty of moisture without clogging the pores or leaving a film of fat, are ideal.
Tip: A clarifying facial tonic for the T-zone is also ideal for combination skin. It prevents pimples, has an anti-inflammatory effect, and regulates sebum production.
With oily, blemished skin, it is particularly important to remove excess oil from the face. A light, anti-inflammatory anti-pimple cleansing gel with active ingredients such as salicylic acid, niacinamide, and the like is the right facial cleanser. A pore-refining, sebum-regulating BHA peeling or tools such as a pore suction device for the T-zone complete the cleansing.
Tip: You shouldn't wash oily skin extra often or with aggressive cleaning products. That would attack the protective barrier of your skin, dry it out and upset the pH value, which really boosts sebum production and makes bacteria easy.
Over the years, not only does the elasticity of the skin decrease, but also its moisture content. It is therefore all the more important to use a moisturizing facial cleansing to prevent wrinkles from dryness and to ensure a radiant complexion.
Anti-aging facial toner with antioxidants provides an additional care effect. Chemical peels are also recommended to reduce fine lines. Innovative cleansing devices with ultrasound or LED functions are also great anti-aging tools for skin at an advanced age.
Whether normal, dry, or combination skin: The skin of the face should be cleaned in the morning and in the evening - but never overdo it.
The optimal facial care routine should take place in this order:
