"I Don't Really Go to Salons, I Do Everything Myself" — Barbara Palvin
Barbara Palvin is a breath of fresh air. She's warm, funny and unfalteringly genuine. You'd think that someone who's taken the fashion scene by storm at such a young age, like she has, would let you know that she's running the show. But when we caught up with her in her Sydney hotel room she was inviting, easy-going and ridiculously down to earth.
The Hungarian born model just turned 21 and she's in Australia to help launch L'Oréal Paris' new digital innovation, their free Makeup Genius app. The makeup brand ambassador joked and laughed, taking time at the end of our chat to take a selfie, because "She is the expert selfie taker". It was her second trip Down Under, she's already a fan, and she's hoping to do the Harbour Bridge climb before she heads home, she said, "The people are really nice and friendly, and the weather is great — I like the accent!"
Far from a high-maintenance beauty freak, Barbara loves natural beauty and making her routine really easy. Here, we chatted about her favourite looks, her top tip for incredible skin and what she thinks is the best makeup you will ever wear.
"The red lipstick and the Super Blackbuster Liner ($10.17). That’s my look, it’s really me. If I was to go out I usually choose one or the other, the eye or the lip, for me it’s usually the lip!"
"That’s hard! I think it would have to be a lipstick. Because I think my skin is still OK, and I try not to wear to much makeup . . . or maybe a mascara? I can't choose!"
"My look doesn’t change too much, in Summer I don’t really wear too much makeup, and in Winter I like to wear a little mascara, blush and lipstick. But that’s it. I like to wear my hair straight and down, but only for about 10 minutes because I always end up putting it up in a little bun!"
"I'm still only 21, so I don’t do too much, but before flying — and I fly a lot — I like to put L'Oréal Paris Skin Perfection Moisturiser ($24.99) on. I put a lot on, like a really thick layer like a mask so my skin doesn’t dry out, but that’s about it, maybe in five years I can talk about that more!"
"If I don’t have to, I don’t wear makeup, and I try to wash my face with cold water twice a day. Before, when I was younger, my great grandmother told me to drink a lot of milk — but that’s pretty difficult for me now because I’m lactose intolerant, so I’ve got to be careful."
"I don’t really go to salons, I do everything myself. But I never touch my eyebrows."
"I use Extraordinary Oil ($19.99) every day, right on the ends so it looks really shiny and healthy. Oh, and shampoo! Sometimes you have to wash your hair [laughs]."
"Chanel Chance ($175), for years and years I’ve worn that."
"I don’t think I have any, because if I hadn’t made those mistakes, I wouldn’t be here now."
"I think it’s confidence, and inner beauty. If you’re happy with yourself then everyone else is going to see that, your smile is your most beautiful makeup."
