From neon colors and chrome designs to colorful French tips, here ten nail artists reveal which trends are their favorites for summer 2021.
Nothing completes a look as perfectly as trendy nail art. This is what Selena Gomez thought when she recently went on a neon course with bright coral-colored eye shadow and matching lime-green nails. Or Kylie Jenner, who gave her casual 'just get coffee and shop' look with long purple tips an exclusive update, because why not? And then there was the Queen herself, Beyoncé, whose blood-orange nails by nail artist Mo Qin gave her tropical New York look a certain shine.
Whether you want to accentuate your makeup look or freshen up an everyday outfit, this summer is all about statement nails. It's a trend that doesn't come as a surprise. According to a trend report by WGSN, after Covid-19, many feel the need to "rediscover eye-catching colors and experiment with creative designs that allow more self-expression."
Do you also need inspiration for your next manicure? Ten of the most renowned nail artists in the industry reveal which looks are among their highlights in nail art this summer.
1. Juan Alvear (@ByJuanAlvear)
“At the moment, I prefer to use extra-long, round nails as a base. If Miu Miu were one nail shape, it would be this one. They also offer a lot of space to get creative. I also really like chrome bases and dark graphic tones, which are a bit more unusual and make a real statement, especially in summer. Furthermore, I like two-tone glitter designs, no matter in which tones, that have something of the ‘beetle look’. Voluminous accents are always good too. I've been asked for raindrop and lava lamp effects."
2. Michelle Humphrey (@NailsByMH)
“I currently love green nails. Not just because green is one of the trending colors for Spring / Summer 2021, but because the color looks really good on nails. Relatively neutral, but still modern. When choosing green, think about the whole color palette, for example, sage green, spring green, olive green, and khaki. The look is particularly modern with a matt green finish - super cool and a real statement, even without additional nail art. Top tip: Go all the way to the edge with the matt topcoat, otherwise there will be shiny spots at the end."
3. Harriet Westmoreland (@HarrietWestmoreland)
“My favorite colors are always a classic transparent nude shade that matches the skin tone, as well as apple red or black for a simple evening look. You really can't go wrong with these colors. I like French nails best of playful color blocking with a clean finish along the cuticle. After my manicures, I still use a drop of "Face Oil" from Augustinus Bader (as nail oil) because it gives the nails the perfect glow.
“In the summer I like to be inspired by the 90s, but with a twist. The result is colorful, neon-colored French tips. The point, however, should be kept extremely narrow in order to give this style, which is often perceived as a bit old-fashioned, a modern touch. The look is definitely cooler that way. The texture should always be smooth, shiny, and glass-like, and the nails should be perfectly rounded when viewed from the side. I'm a fan of short nails because they make them look more elegant overall."
4. Mo Qin (@OhMyNailsNYC)
"In summer I prefer to use bright, eye-catching shades. Colored French tips are currently in vogue. I like to combine different nuances with each other, for example, I use one shade for the small crescent moon (near the cuticle) and another for the nail tip Another favorite of mine are chrome nails with an oily finish. When the sun reflects on them, I feel fantastic."
5. Natasha Blake (@FuegoNailsLDN)
"My favorite nail look for summer is anything that is extraordinary, flashy, and freaky. I've been into psychedelic art a lot lately, a trend that other nail artists seem to be picking up too. My gut tells me that we will see a lot of it this summer. "
6. Sarah Nguyen (@ChrmdBySarah)
"My absolute summer highlights are neon colors, matt finishes, and texture. Keeping everything in one color is definitely in at the moment. I particularly like French tips with neon color gradients and 3D textures with sculpture or hard gel."
7. Holly Falcone (@HollyFalconeNails)
"At the moment I see a lot of jelly nails in 3D with transparent bubbles, sculptural metallic and‘ glass nails ’creations, colorful, glass-like lava lamp effects, and subtle details such as transparent water droplets. I also noticed reflective details, such as magnetic velvet effects, colorful chrome nails, and shimmering finishes. At the other end of the spectrum, there's still classic red nail polish, and that's not going to change anytime soon."
8. Rebecca Jade Wilson (@RebeccaJadeWilson_Nails)
“We're going to see two big trends this summer. On the one hand, we will retain the healthy, natural manicure with subtle color accents à la French manicure, which is a little more playful with good mood accents on the little finger and colorful hearts and stars. The second trend is bright, eye-catching colors. I envision a fantastic summer look with all the nails in similar vibrant colors. "
9. Sojin Oh (@SojiNails)
"I'm currently into bright greens, oranges, yellows, blues, and reds. My favorite styles are hand-made gel looks and designs that are inspired by nature."
