From removing the brass sheen to freshening up icy shades - we can tell you the best silver shampoo for all your needs.
Since the lockdown, maintaining hair color at home has become increasingly important - especially for dyed blondes. This is where the best silver shampoo for your hair comes into play, say the experts. "Blondes have more fun, but the fun doesn't last long!" Jokes colorist Richy Kandasamy, who recently joined the collective of the cult hair care series R + Co. "Blondes have a very light color palette - and delicate, pure blondes tend to fade faster, lose shine, and can look brassy or yellow very quickly." Here's a look at how silver shampoos keep hair color bright and vibrant, and how best to incorporate them into your routine.
A silver shampoo contains purple pigments to neutralize brass and yellow tones on lighter hair. "The main reason it's purple is that it's the direct opposite color of yellow on the color wheel, meaning that purple and yellow cancel each other out," explains Kandasamy. "So when you use a purple pigment on colored brass or yellow tones, it corrects the hue of your hair and gives it back its former natural or neutral brightness with cooler tones." While purple shampoos are especially popular with blondes, they can also be used to freshen up gray or brunette hair with golden highlights.
To use a silver shampoo, wet the hair and lather the formula. "Don't apply it on dry hair as the hair is more porous and will absorb too much of the lilac tone," cautions Kandasamy. Once the color is evenly applied, leave it on for two to four minutes, depending on how many shades of brass or yellow there are in the hair. "Use cool water to rinse out the shampoo, which will help close the cuticle and seal in the color."
When adding a purple silver shampoo to your program, start using it once a week and only increase it when needed. Remember that while silver shampoos are a useful way to keep color fresh, it's important not to overdo it. "If you notice too much purple tint in your hair, put that silver shampoo away," he says. "Opt for a clarifying shampoo to remove the clay and limit your silver shampoo routine to once a week or less. Alternate with color-safe shampoos - or mix them together."
The market for silver shampoos has grown significantly, which can make choosing the best purple shampoos difficult. To find out what will suit your hair best and help you achieve the result you want, the most important rule of thumb applies: the lighter the purple, the more subtle the result. Below are a selection of the best purple shampoos for a wide variety of needs, from removing that dreaded brass sheen to freshening up icy hues.
