The water wave is inevitably reminiscent of the 1920s. Towards the end of the "Golden Age" women increasingly wore short hair: bob hairs and bobs conquered the decade of glamor. Because the short haircut was still a novelty for women, many of them went to the barbershop. After all, skilled stylists put the women's hair in waves of water. Almost 100 years later, in summer 2021, the trend hairstyle is back.
The flapper girls who emerged in the 1920s were considered cheeky and provocative, danced in short skirts (for those times), put on eye-catching make-up, smoked, and drank alcohol during the prohibition era when alcohol was strictly prohibited in the USA. People met in so-called “speakeasys” (secret pubs) to party. Back then, the term “flapper” was associated with the flapping of wings of young birds and referred to the light-heartedness of women.
Writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald immortalized the style of the flappers in their works, which fascinated men and women alike. Instead of body-hugging dresses, fashion became looser - and at the same time shorter. For the first time, women used eye-catching make-up outside of the red light milieu. The short hair was laid in waves of water. The breakthrough of short hairstyles came around the same time as the break from the corset.
In the 1920s, the water wave was particularly popular with the flapper girls.During the presentation of the spring/summer collection 2021, you saw numerous models with sophisticatedly coiffed water waves. Valentino put the water wave in hydrogen-blonde hair and combined eye-catching make-up with the trendy hairstyle, in the spirit of the 1920s with wide eyeliner and dark-rimmed lips. Dries Van Noten, on the other hand, interpreted the water wave in a modern way with visible hair accessories: Each individual wave was fixed with several clips - and decorated at the same time.

The water wave requires technique and wet hair. After washing, apply some mousse to the towel-wet hair and loosen small knots with a coarse comb. Then make an accurate parting on the side. This can be a little deeper. Use your fingers to form some waves out of the bangs and secure them with bobby pins. Then let it air-dry - do not blow-dry! Once dry, remove the hair clips (or leave them in the Dries Van Noten style) and apply a shine spray.
Tip: With long hair, a deep bun goes particularly well with water waves and creates an elegant look.
