Sleep smart: A simple sleeping tip that really helps
Instead of rolling around in bed for hours, do you prefer to fall asleep quickly? Not that difficult if you consider a tip that went viral because it's so simple, yet scientifically proven. If you resist the idea of wearing socks to bed (or even the thought of someone else doing it), a TikTok video that went viral could get you rummaging around in the sock drawer until dark. The clip, which extols the benefits of sleeping in socks and was shared by @Doctorjesss - real name Doctor Jessica Andrade - currently has 2.4 million likes and over 180,000 shares on the platform.
"Wearing socks makes your feet warm, which opens up the blood vessels that cool the body," explains the doctor. "The body that is cool tells the brain that it is time for bed." The result is that people who wear socks in bed fall asleep faster than those who don't - so it's a nifty trick to try if you're not currently falling asleep as quickly as you'd like to.
This is thought to be comparable to the physiological (and sleep-inducing) effects of a hot bath, but there are also numerous studies to support the benefits of wearing socks. A 2007 study by the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience found that people who wore socks to bed fell asleep faster than those who didn't. Other research suggests that warm feet promote faster sleep - an evolutionary response as the extremities are more likely to lose heat.
While wearing socks in bed has long been controversial, fans now have a good excuse again.
