Who has ever had the feeling that hair only grows to a certain point and then suddenly seems to stop? Not just imagination, in fact, as this phenomenon could be related to what is known as genetic hair length, which is supposed to determine how long our hair grows. But is there really such a thing as a magical limit for hair growth or is it just a beauty myth? We got to the bottom of the phenomenon...
On the internet, one reads again and again about a phenomenon called genetic hair length. According to this, the hair growth and the personal maximum hair length should be predetermined by the genes. So that would mean that for some people long hair is not possible at all, because hair growth will eventually reach the limit due to genetic conditions. Incidentally, this should turn out very differently from person to person.
The bad news first: yes, genes actually determine how our hair grows. However, there should not be a certain limit that cannot be exceeded. However, the genetic hair length definitely determines how fast the hair grows. For people with slow hair growth this is about half a centimeter per month - people with naturally faster hair growth, on the other hand, can make it up to two centimeters per month.
In this way, you not only achieve the desired length faster - but the hair can also grow longer overall than in people with very slow growth. Because every hair has a life cycle of seven years, which in turn is divided into three phases - the growth, the transition, and the resting phase.
As the name suggests, the growth phase, which lasts two to six years, is the decisive time in which the hair grows in length. The faster the hair grows in this phase, the longer it can ultimately be. So indirectly, our genes actually determine whether and how quickly we can get long hair.

How fast the hair grows is genetically determined and cannot be influenced from the outside - unfortunately, even the best-advertised miracle drug cannot shake it. However, there is still a lot that can be done to support normal hair growth and keep it healthy and strong all round. In most cases, the hair breaks off due to too frequent dyeing or neglected care before you can even reach your personal maximum hair length.
So that the hair stays healthy and hair breakage is prevented, chemical treatments should be avoided as much as possible and only carried out by absolute experts. Rich care in the form of conditioners and regular masks with regenerative and moisturizing ingredients such as keratin and hyaluronic acid are also recommended to avoid brittle hair and brittle ends. And caffeine shampoos are also ideal for long hair because they stimulate blood circulation in the scalp and thus contribute to the supply of nutrients to the hair roots.
Diet and lifestyle also play an essential role with regard to hair growth: a balanced diet with plenty of vitamins, antioxidants, proteins, and iron is the best basis for strong, long hair. Just like getting enough sleep, giving up cigarettes, and consciously compensating for stress. If you want, you can also rely on supplements with biotin, zinc, selenium, or collagen, which support normal hair growth from the inside out.
