Many dream of defined and shiny curls. Unfortunately, the reality is mostly dull and frizzy hair. Thanks to the Curly Girl method, almost everyone can get well-groomed, natural curls. We'll tell you how to do it.
Many of us have curls naturally without even realizing it. The curls do not come out because we are using the wrong products and are not caring for our hair properly. Too frequent combing and heat also destroy the natural structure of the hair.
You can easily find out whether you are one of those people who actually have waves or even curls with the "Curly Girl Method". We reveal how you can bring out your natural curls and what you have to consider with the Curly Girl Method.
The Curly Girl Method is a hair care routine for wavy and curly hair. Actually, this method is very old. Due to social media, however, she experienced another hype in the last few months.
The method is very complex - there are numerous articles, videos, and even books, all of which contain a lot of detailed information. In our article, we will give you an overview of the most important aspects. If you want to deal with the subject in more detail, we recommend the book "Schöne Locken" by Lorraine Massey.
The aim of the Curly Girl Method is to "bring back" the natural hair structure. To do this, you have to ban everything that damages your hair from the bathroom cabinet. Blow dryers, straighteners, hairbrushes, and weight-bearing care products have no place in your hair routine from now on.
Instead, you are now using a lot of conditioner and hair gel. In summary, the Curly Girl method has four big rules. Of course, you don't have to strictly adhere to them. Test what works best for you.
Before you test the method, you should of course roughly estimate whether you have a tendency to curl at all. If you already know that you have curls, you can use the Curly Girl Method to give them back their natural bounce, so that they look more beautiful, defined, and well-groomed.
If you're unsure whether you tend to curl or wave, the following questions can help you: Is your hair fluffed rather than straight after blow-drying? Does your hair get wavy when you air dry it? Does your hair get frizzy as soon as it rains? If you can answer "yes" to these questions, that is the first indication that your hair is naturally curly.
If you take it very carefully, you should find out in the next step which hair and curl structure you have. There are numerous tables and graphs on the Internet to help you determine this.
The types range from 1a for very straight hair to 4c for very tight, curly hair. There is then an individual method for each hair structure. However, we skip this step and present the method in general.
If you want to use the Curly Girl method, you have to change your entire hair care routine. You don't actually need that many products. Mostly you use conditioner, gel, and a leave-in product.
However, your hair care must not contain any silicones, parabens, sulfates, or alcohol.
When you have got yourself all the products, you can finally start. Before you start the actual hair care routine, you should wash your hair one last time with a deep cleansing shampoo to remove any old residue. In this way, the hair can absorb the new care and moisture in the best possible way.
Step 1: First, wet your hair in the shower as usual and wash it with water. If you can't do without a shampoo at all, wash your hair with a mild shampoo, such as baby shampoo. Just put the shampoo on the roots and save the lengths.
Step 2: Now apply the conditioner generously into your hair. It is best to start at the bottom of the tips and knead the product into your entire hair length. Even in the shower, light curls should form.
Tip: Are you unsure which shampoo and conditioner is suitable for the Curly Girl Method? We can recommend DevaCurl products to you. You get the No-Poo products in a practical set. Both products were rated very well by customers. They should feel light in the hair and not weigh it down at all.
Step 3: Put as much conditioner into your hair until you have no more knots in your hair. If you want to comb your hair, you can do it now if necessary. The conditioner should have untangled your hair by now. If not, either gently run your fingers through your hair or use a wide-toothed comb. Then rinse out the conditioner with lukewarm or cold water.
Step 4: It is important that you don't wring your hair out as you normally would now. Use your hands to grasp the ends of your hair and wring it upward. Do this by kneading. Under no circumstances should you twist your hair or press it straight.
Step 5: Now, using the plopping method, put your hair in a cotton towel or shirt. To do this, lay the towel on the bathtub and let your hair fall down onto the towel from above. Then pick up the remaining hair with your towel and wrap it in a turban. This step is important so that the hair structure is not roughened again. Feel free to leave the towel on for a few minutes so that most of the liquid is out of your hair.
Step 6: Take off the towel and apply a leave-in conditioner or other moisturizing product to your hair if necessary. Make sure that you knead the product into your hair again. Take your time, because this will help your hair regain its original bounce.
Step 7: In the last step, put some hair gel in your hands and knead the gel into your hair as well. Feel free to pick up some new styling gel and work it into your hair. It's best to do it by feeling. In general, however, the following applies here: more is more!
Optional: You should actually let your hair air dry now. But if you don't want to do without your beloved blow dryer, you can carefully blow dry your curls with a defuser attachment.
You should see the first small improvements after the first application. You can only get really great and well-groomed curls after going through this hair routine a few times. After about two to three weeks, your hair should have recovered and look much more curly, well-groomed, and beautiful.
