As hair loses color with age, many women wish to cover up the gray. However, if you want to dye gray hair, you should consider a few things. We got the best tips from a master hairdresser.
If the mane turns gray and you want to re-dye it, you should pay attention to a few things.
While some women have their hair dyed gray or silver by a professional in order to wear the trendy granny look, others prefer to conceal their naturally gray hair. But does it have to be completely colored or are a few highlights at the base enough? "If you're completely gray and don't want a single gray hair anymore, you have to have your hair colored completely and then refresh the roots at regular intervals. Strands can also cover the gray. They look more natural and grow out softer, but a few gray hairs are still visible,” explains Giulia Hiller, a master hairdresser in Ulm. Especially when there are still isolated gray hairs, strands are the good middle ground. Best example: Gwyneth Paltrow. The Oscar winner wears her hair blonde. A few gray hairs remain visible but are hardly noticeable.

If you want to change your hair color, the question often arises: is a tint that slowly washes out enough instead of a permanent color? The expert knows the answer for gray hair: "A normal tint does not cover gray hair well. There are so-called intensive tints that are better in this case. But if you want to be on the safe side, you should get your hair dyed.”
"The lighter the color, the less noticeable it is when the roots grow back to the grey", says hairstylist Hiller. However, there is no ultimate color for covering gray hair. The best thing to do is have your trusted hairdressing salon show you the color catalog and give you advice. The paints there are of good quality and are freshly mixed. Some salons work with vegetable and organic colors, which are particularly gentle.

Stars like Eva Longoria also dye their gray hair – and sometimes even the roots peeking out.
The chemicals in dyes irritate the scalp and stress the hair. Bleaching is particularly aggressive. Appropriate care is all the more important. There are special shampoos for colored hair that contain color protection. The master hairdresser also advises: “Apply conditioner after every hair wash. This not only provides moisture but also protects the color from external influences so that it fades less often. I recommend an intensive treatment every four to five hair washes that strengthen the hair from the inside.”
Gray hair takes color quickly. "If you have a dark natural hair color with a few gray strands and want to become lighter, it can happen, for example, that the gray hair becomes lighter than the rest," explains Giulia Hiller. For a result that is as even as possible, it is better not to do the coloring yourself, but to entrust the mane to a professional.
