What liquid convenience food in bags suggests is actually quite simple: The astronaut diet is based on the low-carb principle and thus relies on a low-carbohydrate and protein-rich diet. The diet got its name because you have to forego many everyday foods during the 13-day cure - just like astronauts in space.
Since carbohydrates are often eliminated from the menu during a diet, the body needs an alternative source of energy. Normally, the glycol stored in the muscle cells is used to generate energy. If there is no supply, the organism begins to draw the energy it needs from the fat cells. Thus, you break down fat tissue and the diet helps you lose weight. Due to the protein-rich diet, however, the muscles remain stable and are not additionally broken down. Those who do sport can even promote muscle building during the astronaut diet.
Instead of carbohydrates, there are vegetables and proteins. Green vegetables such as lettuce, kale, or spinach are the best basis because they contain plenty of fiber and keep you feeling full for a long time. Combine this with fish, meat, tofu, eggs, or dairy products. Unlike other low-carb diets, some fruits are allowed during the astronaut diet. Only fruits with a lot of sugar - including grapes, bananas, and dried fruit - then contain too many carbohydrates.
The astronaut diet strictly eliminates all foods that contain industrial sugar, simple carbohydrates, unhealthy fats, or alcohol. This means that sweets and fast food, as well as bread or pasta, are not allowed during the weight loss phase. It is better to drink at least two liters of tea or still water a day. In addition, the diet plan consists of three fixed meals at regular times. No snacks in between.
