Anyone who has once fallen for the Pinterest frenzy will find it difficult to tear themselves away from the online pin board. Searching for inspiration and pinning images and graphics is way too much fun for that. This is another reason why Pinterest will have almost half a billion (!) Users in 2021.
In Germany alone, over 13.4 million people are actively surfing on Pinterest - and not just in between. According to statistics from 2019, the pinners spend an average of 34 minutes on the page per visit - and thus longer than on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.
It should therefore be clear that Pinterest also plays an important role in trendsetting. And not just in terms of interior or DIY, but also in terms of current trend hairstyles.
For example, the platform's analysts took a very close look at which terms on the subject of hair were being searched for in Germany in March compared to the previous year - and found out: trend hairstyles with a retro look are the hottest in spring 2021, according to Pinterest.
Curtain bangs, in other words, an overly long pony hairstyle in which the hair frames the face like a curtain on the left and right, are extremely popular as a trendy hairstyle, according to Pinterest. Compared to the previous year, the search term “curtain bangs” was searched twelve times more in March 2021.
The popularity of the hairstyle is not surprising. Curtain bangs look romantic, but not too playful or even childish. Rather, they are reminiscent of icons of past decades such as Brigitte Bardot.
Another advantage of retro hair: Curtain bangs also look great when grown out. It doesn't matter if the next visit to the hairdresser is a long time coming. And: Curtain bangs look great on both dark and light hair, flatter almost every face shape, and can also be combined with different hairstyles such as buns or pigtails.
The shag, which was already worn by icons like Mick Jagger and Farrah Fawcett in the 70s, will also enjoy enormous popularity in spring 2021, according to Pinterest. As with the curtain bangs, the increase in searches for “shag haircut” was twelve times as high as in the previous year.
The modern shag is characterized by the fact that the hair is cut less blatantly in layers, but that it is worked with subtle layering. This gives the hair a great structure and more volume, which makes the trend hairstyle look super dynamic.
Mullet Hairstyle Women: This term was entered seven times more often in the search bar on Pinterest in March 2021 than in the previous year. The mullet (in German: mullet) had to struggle with its former Prollo image for a long time. That changed suddenly when stars like Miley Cyrus or Rihanna showed up with the cool retro hair.
As with the shag, the modern mullet uses fewer hard steps. Rather, the different layers of hair fall very subtly and casually, which makes the trend hairstyle look less blatant.
The fact that retro hair is THE trend according to Pinterest can also be seen from the fact that the increase in search queries for the term “vintage hairstyles” was three times as high as in March last year.
Of course, vintage hairstyles not only include hairstyles from the 60s or 70s but also much younger retro hair as we know it from the 90s. The best example: the small face-framing mini braids that model Hailey Bieber, for example, has already worn. A super simple trend hairstyle that you can easily achieve without great styling talent and that you can spice up with colored pigtail ties or hair clips as you wish.
